Increased intakes of Omega-3 fatty acids reduce kidney damage in type 1 diabetics.

Kidney function was improved in type 1 diabetics who had the highest intake of Omega-3 fatty acids including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

The results were based on data from 1,436 people ages 13 to 39. Since diabetics are known to be at increased risk for kidney disease, the researchers wanted to evaluate how to minimize kidney damage. Albumin is the most abundant protein in the human serum and in people with kidney disease. Albumin is often excreted into the urine; therefore the lower the albumin in the urine the better the kidney health. This study indicated that people with the highest intake of Omega-3 fatty acids had the best kidney health.

Therefore, it is important that diabetics obviously maintain their blood sugar but certainly taking Omega-3 fatty acid supplements will also improve their kidney health and decrease diabetic complications.
