Fish Oil Lowers Blood Pressure in Children

August 27,2010 by Jan McBarron M.D.,N.D. (Health Headline News)

Fish oil supplements could lower blood pressure in slightly overweight teenage kids, according to a recent study. Furthermore taking a fish oil supplement in these teenage years may provide them with heart health benefits they will need in years to come. A 16 week study was conducted on overweight teenagers and concluded the following. Children consuming the fish oil supplement enjoyed a reduction in both systolic, top reading, as well as diastolic, bottom reading, of their blood pressure. This corresponded to at least a 15% reduction in risk of stroke. In addition, researchers evaluated other heart disease risk factors including blood sugar, insulin, and cholesterol. They were pleased to notice an increase in HDL, otherwise known as good cholesterol. It has long been noted that taking fish oil supplements is beneficial in many adult studies and now clearly these benefits are shown in children as well. Furthermore, the value to the children immediately as well as reaping long term benefits is encouraging.

  1. More and more children are being diagnose with what were once thought to be adult diseases.

When I was growing up go play didn’t mean sit in front of a tv and play it meant GO OUTSIDE AND PLAY. Not to mention the fact that everything that is marketed to children is high in sugar and preservatives. We are truly killing our kids by trying to be friends with them instead of being parents. Thanks for offering healthy alternatives in the Peachtree Natural Foods stores. My children love the Barlean’s omega swirl. Anyone that doesn’t at least try going this route for ADHD or heart health related issues in children should be charged with neglect. Thanks again!
