‘PSA’, otherwise known as prostate specific antigen, is a protein found in the blood of men whose prostate has been irritated. This irritation can be caused by inflammation, viruses, bacteria, or cancer. Traditionally, men have always been evaluated for prostate cancer with the digital rectal exam and prostate biopsy. In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, PSA blood testing was discovered. At the time, this was heralded and promised to be a simple and effective way to screen men for prostate cancer. However, over the years many men have been diagnosed with prostate cancer based on PSA levels and, unfortunately, did not have cancer. This has left the value of this testing in question.
A recent study demonstrated that benefits from PSA screening requires at least 10 years to take effect, and therefore it seems questionable to invite all men over the age of 70 to have PSA testing.
On the other hand, it is believed that PSA testing in young men may be effective for detecting aggressive prostate cancer.
The overall conclusion remains that PSA testing alone should not be viewed as a way of preventing prostate cancer, nor be the sole means of detecting the presence of it.
Common Prostate Conditions
Prostate enlargement is very common as men age — symptoms usually develop around age 50 and by age 60, most men have some degree of BPH. At age 85, men have an 90% chance of having urination problems caused by BPH. It’s important to note that BPH is not cancer and it does not put you at increased risk for developing prostate cancer.
