Protect Your Eyes with Diet and Nutrition
by Jan McBarron MD, ND (Natural Remedy News)
As the Baby Boomer generation ages, more people experience some extent of vision loss due to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and other sight-robbing diseases. In efforts to find natural remedies for eye health studies have been conducted on nutrition and its direct impact on loss of vision, including several conducted at Tufts University in Boston, MA.
One study indicated that regularly consuming a combination of protective nutrients of low-glycemic-index, or “slow carb” foods, provided protection from macular degeneration. A food’s glycemic index is an indicator of how fast the carbohydrates will spike blood sugar levels. For example, whole wheat and white refined sugar are both carbohydrates, yet whole wheat tends to increase blood sugar very slowly while white refined table sugar causes an immediate spike. This rapid rise in blood sugar has been directly associated with damage to the retina of the eye. Click Here: Shopping Tips for Low Glycemic Diet
In a related study, researchers analyzed dietary intake and other data for more than 4,000 men and women ages 55 to 80. The research allowed them to evaluate associations between individual and combined dietary nutrients.
The nutrients found to be protective in combination of low-glycemic-index diets were the antioxidants vitamins C and E as well as zinc and Omega-3 fatty acids, otherwise known as DHA and EPA. The combination of these proved to be beneficial in improving vision as well as reducing risk of AMD.
DHA and EPA are the key Omega-3 fatty acids found in abundance in fish oil. Since fish contains high levels of mercury and other environmental pollutants, it is not wise to rely on dietary fish intake with high levels of those elements to promote good eye health. Instead, taking a good fish oil supplement free of mercury and dioxins is essential for protecting vision.
Dr. McBarron’s Natural Remedy:
Vita Logic Fish Oilis a rich source of Omega-3 fatty acids including DHA and EPA. It is derived from Nordic coldwater fish which provides the purest of fish oil supplements. Vita Logic Fish Oil does not contain mercury or other contaminates and therefore is sometimes preferred over adding fish to the diet. Also, Vita Logic Fish Oil is a soft gel capsule which reduces or eliminates any “fish oil burp.”
