Antacids Cause Hip Fractures

Antacid medications, both over the counter and prescription, increase the risk of hip fractures. The researchers analyzed data on over 40,000 patients taking acid reducing medications. They noted that regardless of the type of medications, antacids blocked calcium absorptions and subsequently increased the risk of osteoporosis.

A disturbing finding was that a very small dose contributed to bone loss. The evidence of bone loss occurred even in individuals taking less than one antacid pill a day. Even more alarming was seen in patients who took more than one pill a day; they suffered a 41% higher risk of Osteoporosis. It should be noted that these risks went up dramatically the longer a patient was on these medications. The antacid medications studied included Nexium, Prilosec, Protonix, and Aciphex.

Clearly in the senior population at risk for osteoporosis, antacid medications should be avoided. If antacids are given, it is critically important that proper calcium supplementation be administered.

Cholesterol Drugs Linked To Prostate Cancer
