Curcumin Fights Disease

DD-curcumin-fights-diseaseTurmeric is best known as a spice that is a main component of curry powder. In India, the home of 2500 year old Ayurvedic medicine, it has been recognized as a powerful remedy for a multitude of health conditions from inflammation to cancer. Its bioactive phytochemical component, curcumin, has been identified as the basis for turmeric’s long-standing reputation as a powerful spice with several medicinal properties. Curcumin also provides Turmeric with its easily identifiable orange-yellow coloring.

The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry published a study conducted by an Oregon State University research team who found that curcumin “exerts a measurable increase in levels of a protein that’s known to be important in the innate immune system, helping to prevent infection in humans and other animals.” According to their findings, curcumin activated the cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide, or CAMP, a critical component of our immune system that identifies previously unknown pathogenic invaders and identifies and removes it. Any increase in CAMP levels has a significant impact to human health and well-being due to its ability to improve immune system functioning. A stronger immune system promotes the absence of chronic conditions and also prevents systemic inflammation which many physicians presume is the catalyst for many diseases.

“A preliminary intervention trial that compared curcumin with a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) in 18 rheumatoid arthritis patients found that improvements in morning stiffness, walking time, and joint swelling after two weeks of curcumin supplementation (1,200 mg/day) were comparable to those experienced after two weeks of NSAID therapy (300 mg/day). A placebo-controlled trial in 40 men who had surgery to repair a hernia found that oral curcumin supplementation (1,200 mg/day) for five days was more effective than a placebo in reducing post-surgical edema, tenderness and pain, and was comparable to NSAID therapy (300 mg/day).” [i]

Curcumin’s ability to fight harmful bacteria is well documented. One of the earliest known studies to identify curcumin’s powerful antibacterial properties found that it effectively targets several strains of bacteria with experts suggesting supplementation with 500 mg of a standardized curcumin supplement daily to yield optimal protection.

Curcumin also inhibits pain and inflammation by selectively targeting and inhibiting the acids that give rise to both inflammation and pain.

From cancer and cardiovascular disease to gastrointestinal disorders and pain, curcumin is an excellent source of health-promoting nourishment that offers multiple benefits. And best of all is the fact that curcumin is relatively inexpensive, even when purchased as a supplement in capsule form.

    Dr. McBarron,
    AWESOME supplement /spice and remedy for many of my family’s aliments and pain. One by one, I am convincing siblings to try curcumin. I talk to them when they want be relieved of pain and thave tried everything else the DR. prescribes. ONLY then will they listen to another alternative.
